Palacete Imperial faces abandonment in central Rio de Janeiro
The Palacete Imperial, a historic building in central Rio de Janeiro, is facing severe abandonment, structural decay, and reports of irregular occupation. Located near Campo de Santana, the edifice has been closed by the Civil Defense since 2008 due to collapse risks. The building holds significant historical value, having witnessed the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889.
Owned by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) since 1978, the site has been under the responsibility of the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) since 2012. Plans to house the National Center of Archaeology (CNA) in the building failed to progress, and the CNA was ultimately established in Brasília instead.
Iphan stated it has performed emergency works and cleaning as per its agreement with UFRJ, but the agency has requested to terminate its responsibility contract for the property. Local residents report ongoing vandalism and the presence of people experiencing homelessness, noting that previous revitalization promises remain unfulfilled. The Rio Operations Center confirmed the building remains closed following multiple inspections.
