Palacio de Bibataubín undergoes historical transformations in Granada
The Palacio de Bibataubín in Granada has undergone numerous transformations throughout its history. Currently serving as the headquarters for the Advisory Council, the building has previously functioned as a castle, a military barracks, a seat for the Provincial Council, and even a residence for various social outcasts.
The name Bibataubín is derived from the Almohad-era gate 'Bab al Tawwabin'. While its exact meaning remains a subject of debate among historians, interpretations include the ‘Gate of the Executed’, ‘Gate of the Tanners’, ‘Gate of the Hermits’, or ‘Gate of the Brickmakers’. Following the Reconquista, the Catholic Monarchs ordered the construction of a small castle at the site, which housed a military garrison under the command of the Alhambra's governor for over a century.
