Palacký University researchers use gold nanostructures to detect dopamine and serotonin

Researchers at Palacký University's CATRIN research group have developed new methods using gold nanostructures to detect extremely low concentrations of dopamine and serotonin. These advancements utilize Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) to enable highly sensitive and personalized diagnostics.

One study introduced a “plasmonic paper” coated with gold nanostars, which allows for the analysis of dopamine levels in tears. This could assist in diagnosing Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease often confused with dry eye syndrome.

A second study focused on the simultaneous detection of serotonin and sertraline, a common antidepressant. By using gold nanospheres with gaps smaller than 20 nanometers, researchers created “hot spots” of intense electromagnetic fields. This capability allows for monitoring both the antidepressant concentration and the serotonin levels it affects, potentially helping clinicians tailor treatments to individual patients.
