Palacký University to host international conference on composer Josef Suk
The Department of Musicology at Palacký University's Faculty of Arts is organizing an international musicological conference titled ‘Josef Suk – between home and the world, between admiration and attacks, between Dvořák, Mahler and Martinů’. Starting September 28, the event will examine the life and work of composer Josef Suk (1874–1935) from various perspectives, including his roles as a pedagogue and collaborator.
The conference follows recent anniversaries marking 150 years since Suk's birth and 90 years since his death. Discussions will place Suk within the broader context of Central European culture, exploring his international reception and his relationships with figures such as his teacher and father-in-law, Antonín Dvořák. The program will also feature lectures and concerts, including a presentation by philosopher Ivan Blecha regarding the world around 1900 through the lens of Gustav Mahler's work.
