Palagonia: Five reported after clandestine horse race involving firearms

Police in Catania have identified and reported five individuals following a clandestine horse race in Palagonia. The event, which gained attention through viral social media videos, reportedly featured participants on scooters brandishing pistols while escorting the horses through local roads.

During the investigation, authorities rescued a seven-month-old foal that had been forced to compete. The animal was located in a stable in the San Cristoforo district of Catania, microchipped by veterinary services from the ASP di Catania, and transferred to a specialized facility for care. Police also seized racing equipment and tack believed to be used during the unauthorized event.

Local activist group Free Green Sicilia has raised concerns regarding the legality and nature of these races. Spokesperson Alfio Lisi questioned whether the recent footage depicts a new incident or a repeat of a September event that previously led to an arrest involving a Kalashnikov. The association has called for authorities to investigate the potential for organized crime involvement, describing the activities as “zoomafioso” and a form of animal cruelty.
