Palaiopyrgos Bridge in Larissa Remains Hazardously Used Despite Closure

The Palaiopyrgos Bridge spanning the Pinios River near Larissa was badly damaged by the September 2023 storm Daniel, which wrecked dozens of bridges across northern‑central Greece. The central portion of the bridge now hangs perilously over the water, and although it has been officially closed, vehicles—including cars, tractors and other farm equipment—continue to cross it daily. Local navigation systems still direct drivers to the unsafe crossing, forcing farmers to choose a risky shortcut instead of a 30‑kilometre detour to reach nearby fields.

The bridge connects the Palaiopyrgos area with several neighbouring communities. The regional authorities have warned that the situation endangers motorists and have urged the national government to either repair the structure or enforce a full shutdown. A contract for the bridge’s demolition and the construction of a new crossing was signed in spring 2025, but as of July 2026 the work has not begun, prompting further calls for decisive action.
