Palani Mutt Land Scam: Court Orders CB‑CID Report, Multiple Arrests
The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court directed the state crime‑investigation department (CB‑CID) to file a detailed status report on the alleged Rs 100‑crore land fraud involving the Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamigal Mutt. The court also postponed the hearing on petitions seeking a transfer of the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation to August 5.
Petitioners, including former Palani MLA K. S. N. Venugopalu, municipality chairperson R. Uma Maheshwari Pradeep and trustee Annapoorani Sivakumar, argued that forged documents were used to illegally register a 1.66‑acre plot worth about Rs 60 crore to private individuals on July 6. The investigation has led to the arrest of four accused and the examination of 84 witnesses, and it has placed the suspended Palani sub‑registrar Justin Manikandan under scrutiny. Municipal authorities have opened a separate inquiry into the suspicious registrations and plan to file a police complaint.
