Palantir CTO claims AI researchers are smoking to signal faith in cancer cures

Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar has claimed that some artificial intelligence researchers in Silicon Valley are taking up smoking as a way to signal their extreme confidence that AI technology will eventually cure cancer.

Speaking on CBS’s ‘Face the Nation’, Sankar described the trend as a form of “mass psychosis” and “social delusion.” He argued that many individuals developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) have replaced traditional religious faith with a belief in a “machine god.”

Avi Schiffmann, founder of the AI wearable startup Friend, expressed a similar sentiment, suggesting that by the time individuals develop lung cancer, AI robots are expected to have found a cure.
