Palau implements waste-to-fuel and glass recycling system

The Republic of Palau has implemented a recycling system that processes 80% of imported containers through a combination of industrial conversion and local craftsmanship. To fund the initiative, a 10-cent tax is applied to every imported glass, plastic, or aluminum container, while residents receive a 5-cent incentive for returning packaging to sorting centers.

At the Palau Eco Glass facility, plastic waste is heated to produce fuel. This fuel is used to power the recycling center’s generators and construction machinery. Aluminum is collected and shipped to Asia for processing.

Glass waste is repurposed through artisanal glass blowing. Under the guidance of Japanese expert Kyoko Kirako, local artisans such as Ito Godwin use high-temperature furnaces to transform glass into works of art, including coral-shaped sculptures.
