Palau President rejects China's pressure over Taiwan ties

Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr has rejected pressure from Beijing to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan, asserting that the decision to recognize Taiwan is “our choice, not yours.” The President addressed threats of retaliation from China following Palau's decision to provide increased access to Taiwan during the recent Pacific Islands Forum leaders’ meeting.

Whipps described attempts by the Chinese ambassador to influence Palau through economic incentives, such as tourism and infrastructure development, while simultaneously threatening “consequences” if the nation does not comply with Beijing's demands. The President characterized these actions as a threat to sovereignty rather than a partnership, stating that small nations must present a unified front to curb regional belligerence.
