Palazzo Strozzi Mark Rothko exhibition sets attendance record

The Mark Rothko exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence has concluded with record-breaking attendance. Over its 162-day run, the exhibition drew 301,730 visitors to Palazzo Strozzi, making it the most visited exhibition in the Foundation's 20-year history.

The project extended beyond the main venue, attracting 96,665 visitors to the Museo di San Marco and 32,140 to the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, totaling over 430,000 visitors across the three sites. The exhibition, curated by Christopher Rothko and Elena Geuna, integrated Rothko's paintings with Florence's historical landmarks.

The event also demonstrated significant economic and tourism impact, with approximately 200,000 visitors—60% of the total audience—traveling from outside the Florence metropolitan area. The exhibition featured loans from major international institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate, and the National Gallery of Art.
