Palazzolo Acreide Mayor Requests New State Police Commissariat

Following a violent robbery of a jewelry store in the historic centre of Palazzolo Acreide, mayor Salvatore Gallo has asked the prefect and Italy's Ministry of the Interior to establish a State Police commissariat for the mountain area of the Iblei. The mayor says the crime wave, which also includes attacks on other jewelers, public property and banks, has exposed the limits of the current Carabinieri presence, which operates with limited staff across a territory of about 28,000 residents.

Gallo’s formal letter proposes a commissariat that would serve Palazzolo Acreide and nearby municipalities – Canicattini Bagni, Buccheri, Buscemi, Cassaro, Ferla and Sortino – and offers municipal cooperation in locating premises and providing logistical support. A recent open town council session on the issue saw very low citizen turnout, underscoring community disengagement despite heightened security concerns.
