Palácio da Ajuda to Exhibit King Luís I Portrait from Caixa Geral

The Palácio Nacional da Ajuda in Lisbon has begun a permanent exhibition of an 1868 oil portrait of King Luís I, painted by 19th‑century Portuguese artist Miguel Ângelo Lupi. The work, owned by the public bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), was deposited in the museum as part of a long‑term loan agreement that can be renewed in five‑year periods.

The display coincides with CGD’s 150th anniversary and the bicentenary of Lupi’s birth. Director José Alberto Ribeiro said the portrait “integrates completely into the exhibition discourse of the palace” and highlighted its excellent state of conservation. The painting will be shown in the Sala dos Últimos Quartos do Rei, where the king lived from 1862 until his death, and had never before been on permanent public display.
