Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte announces restoration and new opera

The Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte is undergoing significant cultural developments. The venue is set to begin a long-awaited restoration project following a 30-year wait. This initiative is a partnership between the Minas Gerais State Government and the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG), with an initial investment of R$ 10 million. Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, the complex serves as a major cultural hub for the region.

Additionally, the Palácio das Artes is hosting the premiere of a new opera titled ‘Chica da Silva’. Composed by Guilherme Bernstein with a libretto by Marcos Bernstein and Flávia Bessone, the production aims to present a nuanced portrayal of the historical figure, moving away from previous cinematic and television depictions of her as merely a seductive or exotic character. The production features the Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra and the Minas Gerais Lyric Choir.
