Palenque pyrotechnics accident injures four during celebrations

A pyrotechnics malfunction during Independence Day celebrations in the central plaza of Palenque, Chiapas, resulted in four injuries and widespread panic on September 15. The incident occurred around 11:00 PM following the official ceremony when fireworks failed to launch correctly, instead detonating at low altitudes and projecting toward the crowd.

Witnesses and social media footage showed families fleeing toward nearby businesses and alleys to escape the uncontrolled explosions. Municipal Civil Protection responded to the scene to provide first aid. The four injured individuals suffered burns and minor impacts, primarily to their backs, but are reported to be in stable condition and out of life-threatening danger.

There are conflicting reports regarding the cause of the accident. While citizens and digital users suggest an operational failure in the pyrotechnic battery, the Palenque City Council indicated that some attendees may have disregarded safety instructions by entering restricted areas. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the malfunction.
