Paleontological discoveries reported in California and Italy

Two significant paleontological and archaeological discoveries have been reported in California and Italy.

In San Mateo County, California, geomorphologist Brigid Lynch discovered a well-preserved fossilized tooth of a Pacific mastodon in a stream. The specimen, which includes an intact crown and root, has been donated to Stanford University. Researchers plan to determine its age and create a 3D model to study the Pleistocene era and the region's glacial history.

In Sezze, Italy, excavations at the Vittorio Vecchi Cave have revealed a prehistoric hyena den dating back approximately 50,000 years. The site also yielded various artifacts, including bronze fibulae, pottery, and worked bone objects. The discovery suggests the cave may have served as both a refuge for animals and a potential site of cultural or ritual significance for ancient human populations.
