Palermo: 26 million euro plan for Ingrassia hospital redevelopment

A redevelopment project for the Ingrassia hospital in Palermo, valued at 26 million euros, has raised concerns regarding a proposed three-year closure of the facility starting next July.

Giuseppe Bonsignore, president of the regional Cimo-Fesmed Sicilia, has expressed concern over the lack of official information regarding where hospital departments will be relocated. The facility currently manages 133 beds and recorded approximately 28,765 emergency room visits in 2025, averaging 79 daily.

Experts warn that without adequate replacement solutions, the closure could increase pressure on other Palermo hospitals, leading to longer wait times for admissions, surgeries, and exams. This shift could disproportionately affect elderly patients, fragile individuals, and families with limited resources, while also increasing the workload for medical staff at receiving facilities.
