Palermo administration faces instability after failed council session

The political stability of the Palermo administration is facing uncertainty following a failed City Council session. A scheduled meeting intended for Mayor Roberto Lagalla to present his program report could not proceed because the required quorum was not met. Only 19 majority councilors were present, falling short of the 21 needed for a legal session.

Several members of the center-right coalition were absent, including representatives from Fratelli d’Italia, Lega, and the DC. This lack of attendance has highlighted growing fractures within the majority. The situation comes as Mayor Lagalla has publicly expressed interest in seeking continuity for his administration toward 2029.

A formal majority verification is expected by September 15. This process will involve discussions with allied party secretariats to determine whether the current administration will undergo a reshuffle or maintain its existing structure. Key issues on the table include appointments within municipal companies and the Metropolitan City, alongside broader regional and national political alignments.
