Palermo-Agrigento railway line reopens after infrastructure upgrades
The full Palermo-Agrigento railway line has reopened following the completion of maintenance and infrastructure upgrades by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana. The final segment to resume service is the stretch between Lercara Diramazione and Agrigento Centrale, following the earlier reactivation of the Fiumetorto-Lercara Diramazione section on September 14.
The extensive works involved the consolidation or replacement of 41 crossing structures, including bridges, viaducts, underpasses, and hydraulic works. Technical upgrades included the renewal of electric traction systems between Cammarata and Campofranco and at the Agrigento Bassa station, as well as the installation of fiber optics.
Additional improvements focused on track maintenance at the Agrigento Centrale station and within the San Gerlando and San Giusippuzzo tunnels. The project also included the installation of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) to enhance train spacing control and safety. Once the certification process is completed next month, the line is expected to support next-generation trains, offering improved reliability, comfort, and safety standards.
