Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport expands services and explores privatization

Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport has inaugurated several new premium services and dining facilities to enhance its international competitiveness. In collaboration with Gesap and Avolta (part of the Autogrill group), the airport opened the AMORE Do Eat Better restaurant, the Planeta Wine Bar—featuring Sicilian wines from the Planeta and Serra Ferdinandea estates—and the Prima Vista lounge.

These expansions coincide with significant growth in passenger traffic. The airport recorded 9.2 million passengers in 2025, with a 25% increase in air traffic reported over the last year. Officials aim to reach 10 million passengers by the end of 2026.

Amidst these developments, Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagalla announced intentions to pursue partial privatization of the airport. He stated that while the airport's accounts are positive, a large private group is needed to provide the necessary investment capacity and specialized expertise required for modern aviation service contracts. The city is currently being assisted by market advisors to prepare the tender process.
