Palermo approves 1.6 million euro innovation hub for ex-Gasometro site

The Palermo City Council has approved a redevelopment project for the former Remo Sandron Gasometer area, located between Borgo Vecchio and Ucciardone. The initiative aims to transform the industrial site into the Mezzogiorno Innovation Center (MIC).

The project involves an investment of over 1.6 million euros, funded entirely by the proponents—the Ziz – Il Fiore dell’Arte Association, in partnership with Tmp Group and Amg Energia—meaning there will be no cost to the municipal budget. The planned hub will feature a vertical garden, co-working spaces, an expo area, a prototyping zone, multimedia production facilities, a lounge-bar/restaurant, and a small guest house. Additionally, a garden will be opened to the public free of charge.

Mayor Roberto Lagalla described the move as a significant step toward regenerating a major industrial archaeology site, returning an abandoned space to the community as a center for innovation, culture, and social interaction.
