Palermo approves RFI management for new railway ring section
The Palermo City Council has approved a concession agreement between the Sicilian Region, the Municipality of Palermo, and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) to manage new railway infrastructure. This agreement facilitates the first functional phase of the Palermo railway ring, specifically the underground section connecting the Giachery stop to the new Palermo Politeama station.
The new route spans approximately 1,637 meters of tunnel, passing through the Libertà-Politeama and Sampolo-Ucciardone districts. The project includes the creation of two new stations, Palermo Porto and Palermo Politeama, in addition to the existing Palermo Libertà stop.
Construction for this phase was completed in November 2025, and final station refinements are currently underway. The approval of this concession allows the national railway safety agency, ANSFISA, to finalize its safety investigation, which is a prerequisite for the line to enter service, potentially as early as October. Once operational, the semi-ring will connect central city areas with the existing railway passante and tram lines.
