Palermo authorities crack down on illegal labor and safety violations

Authorities in Palermo have conducted a series of inspections targeting illegal labor and workplace safety violations as part of the national “Empact THB” campaign. The operation involved the Carabinieri Labor Inspectorate, the Palermo INPS Provincial Directorate, and local territorial units.

During the inspections, which focused on commercial activities such as clothing stores, home goods shops, beauty centers, and a car wash, officials examined eight companies. Six of these businesses were found to be irregular, primarily regarding workplace safety standards. The crackdown resulted in the suspension of four businesses and the reporting of six employers—two Italian and four Chinese nationals.

Investigators identified 17 workers, six of whom were undocumented. The enforcement actions led to fines totaling €35,255 and administrative sanctions amounting to €67,800. Additionally, the INPS is reviewing the status of three self-employed individuals who were not registered with the social security institute.
