Palermo authorities uncover illegal electricity connections in residential building
Carabinieri officers in Palermo have reported the discovery of an entire residential building in the Borgo Nuovo district that was illegally connected to the public electricity grid. The operation, conducted in coordination with Enel technicians, targeted a residential complex on via Pietro Dell’Aquila.
During inspections of electricity meters, authorities uncovered a complex network of clandestine connections. These artisanal bypasses were installed upstream of the meters, allowing electricity to be drawn directly from the main distribution network without being recorded.
Ten residents, aged between 29 and 76, have been reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office for aggravated theft of electricity. Enel technicians removed the illegal cables and secured the system to prevent potential short circuits or fires. Authorities stated that further inspections will continue in other neighborhoods to combat urban decay and illegal utility connections.
