Palermo business group proposes intensive catechesis to address First Communion delays

The association Confimprese Palermo has submitted a formal proposal to Archbishop Corrado Lorefice regarding the delay of First Communion celebrations in the region. The controversy stems from a new pastoral reform that has led to concerns that some children may not receive the sacrament until age 14.

To address this, Confimprese Palermo suggests implementing an intensive training cycle during the 2026-2027 pastoral year for older children. This model, described as similar to academic remedial courses, aims to concentrate the required educational content into a single year rather than spreading it across two or three years. The association emphasizes that this proposal does not seek to dismantle the new pastoral project or reduce educational content, but rather to adjust the timing for those affected by the transition.

Confimprese Palermo is seeking a public and detailed response from the Curia, noting that previous attempts at dialogue have gone unanswered. The group highlights the need to balance pastoral objectives with the practical impact on families and local economic activities.
