Palermo City Council faces political crisis during Mayor's report

The Palermo City Council has experienced significant political instability during the presentation of Mayor Roberto Lagalla’s annual government report. Opposition parties, including the Democratic Party, Movimento 5 Stelle, and Avs, have walked out of sessions to protest what they describe as limited debate times and a lack of democratic transparency.

Opposition members have characterized the situation as a “declared political crisis,” alleging that the Mayor no longer maintains a functional majority and is unable to govern effectively. They have raised concerns regarding the city's financial management, specifically citing issues with municipal companies and increases in the waste tax (Tari).

In contrast, Council President Giulio Tantillo has dismissed these claims, describing the absences as an “incident of the path” rather than a systemic collapse. Tantillo maintained that the majority remains cohesive and supports the Mayor, asserting that sessions would resume with full attendance to ensure the administration's program is addressed.
