Palermo district faces neglect as social center sits abandoned

The Sperone district in Palermo is facing renewed concerns regarding urban neglect following the closure of a local social center on via Vittorio. Giuseppe Federico, president of the Second District, reported that the facility has remained shuttered and unmanaged for twelve months since the expiration of the ‘PalermAbility’ project.

Originally restored by the municipal administration to serve as a hub for disability services, social gardening, and animal-assisted therapy, the building is now reportedly suffering from vandalism and decay. Federico warned that leaving the property unmonitored risks the theft of materials like copper and window frames, potentially wasting previous public investments. The situation highlights broader systemic issues in fragile neighborhoods like Sperone, Zen, and Brancaccio, which lack sufficient structures to support local youth.
