Palermo electrical grid upgrade: E-Distribuzione announces 325 million euro investment
Following summer blackouts caused by heatwaves, E-Distribuzione has announced a major investment plan to strengthen the electrical grid in Palermo and its metropolitan area. The company has committed 325 million euros over the next three years to develop new medium-voltage lines and secondary substations.
By the end of 2024, two primary electrical hubs, named Università Palermo and Oreto, will be completed. These hubs are connected to the 150 kV national transmission network and are designed to increase grid interconnection and flexibility. Specific network reinforcements are also planned for the historic center and the Mondello area.
In the surrounding metropolitan territory, three new primary plants are scheduled to become operational in Altavilla Milicia, San Cipirello, and Borgo Vicaretto. The initiative follows a meeting between Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagalla and E-Distribuzione representatives to address the need for a more resilient grid capable of handling extreme weather events.
