Palermo healthcare investigations reveal medical malpractice and fraud
Investigations in Palermo have uncovered significant issues within the regional healthcare system, involving both medical malpractice and organized fraud.
A 66-year-old woman from Bagheria was awarded over 24,000 euros by a Palermo court after the Villa Serena clinic was found liable for a botched surgical procedure in 2010. The patient suffered permanent foot deformities following corrective surgery. However, due to the clinic’s entry into a debt restructuring process (concordato preventivo), the victim is expected to receive only a portion of the court-ordered compensation.
In a separate corruption scandal, former ASP doctor Leonardo “Armando” Gaziano has accepted a plea bargain resulting in a sentence of 2 years and 8 months. Gaziano was accused of issuing fraudulent disability certificates without examining patients and directing patients toward specific private orthopedic companies. In exchange, he allegedly received bribes including cash, wine, oil, and seafood.
An intermediary, Giuseppe Nicoletti, received a four-year sentence for managing the system that facilitated these fraudulent certifications. During searches of Nicoletti’s properties, investigators discovered approximately 1.2 million euros in cash.
