Palermo inaugurates new railway ring section with free travel
The Giachery-Politeama section of the Palermo railway ring has been officially inaugurated, connecting the city's port and central areas to the Notarbartolo station. This development marks the completion of the first functional phase of the ring, adding two new stops in the heart of the city: Porto and Politeama.
The project was commissioned by the Municipality of Palermo and implemented by Rfi, with works directed by FS Engineering and financial support of 54 million euros from the Sicilian Region. To encourage public transit use and reduce traffic and smog, regional authorities have announced that travel across all seven stops of the ring will be free of charge from tomorrow until January 31, 2027.
The seven stations in the ring include Notarbartolo, Libertà, Imperatore Federico, Fiera, Giachery, Porto, and Politeama. The service utilizes two latest-generation Pop 2 trains, each capable of carrying 575 passengers. Initial service frequency is set at one train every 30 minutes, with plans to increase frequency to every 20 minutes and eventually every 15 minutes.
