Palermo initiates extraordinary waste removal plan for coastal neighborhoods

The municipal administration of Palermo announced an extraordinary intervention to clear illegally dumped waste from the coastal districts of Arenella, Vergine Maria, Sferracavallo and the South Coast. Environment assessor Pietro Alongi said a technical table with RAP officials was convened and that the RAP team has already removed about six tonnes of waste from the Arenella port area, illustrating that the problem stems largely from illicit behavior by some citizens rather than beachgoers alone.

The plan will strengthen waste‑removal operations, increase monitoring of sensitive zones and introduce stricter sanctions. Officials aim to have the supporting regulation approved by the city council, targeting a problem that generates roughly 22,000 tonnes of litter each year.
