Palermo merchants protest economic losses from religious protocol changes
Merchants in Palermo, including florists, photographers, and souvenir shop owners, held a sit-in in front of the Archbishop's Palace to protest economic losses caused by changes to religious protocols. The protest follows a decision by the Curia two years ago to extend the preparation period for first communion and confirmation from two years to five years.
Giovanni Felice, president of Confimprese Palermo, stated that the city previously saw approximately 3,500 communions annually. He estimated that the economic impact has reached 30 million euros per year, with some businesses reporting revenue drops of 30% to 50%. Business associations are requesting a meeting with Archbishop Corrado Lorefice and have proposed intensifying religious instruction courses to shorten the five-year duration.
Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagalla addressed the situation, clarifying that the municipal administration will not provide specific compensation or bailouts for losses attributed to the Church's pastoral decisions. Instead, he announced a broader proposal to use administrative surplus to support the city's general productive fabric through grants for business modernization and consolidation.
