Anthony Barbagallo resigns as PD regional secretary in Sicily

Anthony Barbagallo has resigned from his position as the regional secretary of the Democratic Party (PD) in Sicily. In a public statement, Barbagallo explained that his decision was driven by the need for a new organizational structure to unify the party's various factions ahead of the 2027 regional elections.

Barbagallo noted that despite his efforts over recent months to reconcile different internal sensitivities, a cohesive unity has not yet been achieved. He stated that the party must “change gear” to build a credible political alternative and is handing the mandate back to the national leadership to find an authoritative and shared solution for the region.

The resignation follows a period of internal tension and divisions between the regional secretary and several members of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. Potential successors being discussed to lead the party, possibly as a commissioner, include Nico Stumpo and Marco Sarracino.
