Italy Advances Privatization of Catania and Comiso Airports

The Italian government is moving ahead with the privatization of the airports managed by SAC, which operates Catania and Comiso facilities. Minister for Enterprises Giancarlo Urso announced that the process aims to attract new investment, and a public tender has been issued for the acquisition of a 51% to 66% stake, with the submission deadline set for 3 June 2026.

In parallel, Sicily’s regional president Renato Schifani asked for detailed information on a separate project to develop an airport in Agrigento. He highlighted the need for transparent data on financing, economic sustainability, passenger‑flow forecasts, and maintenance costs, stressing that any large‑scale infrastructure must be examined in coordination with the regional authorities.

Both initiatives are presented as opportunities to boost regional growth, improve connectivity, and involve private capital in Sicily’s aviation sector.
