Palermo Reassigns Public Housing Unit in Zen District to New Family

The Palermo municipal Social Housing Unit, together with the municipal police, handed over a public residential building in the Zen district to a family listed in the emergency housing register. The previous occupants, three brothers who had lived in the apartment for 35 years, voluntarily returned the keys to the city following their father's death, allowing the new family – two parents, five children and a grandmother living in severe economic and housing distress – to move in.

Mayor‑appointed Housing Assessor Fabrizio Ferrandelli described the act as “a full act of legality and civility,” saying the episode shows the “best face of Zen” and that “for this family an nightmare ends.” The handover concluded a municipal campaign to combat illegal occupations and reaffirm the right of eligible families to access public housing, culminating in the city's requisition of the property and its reassignment to those in need.
