Palermo waste management faces critical service failures

The SRR Palermo 1 has issued a formal warning to the Municipality of Palermo regarding significant failures in the city's waste collection service. In a note signed by President Natale Tubiolo, the agency highlighted several operational deficiencies, including ineffective service contracts, uncontrolled waste abandonment, and a lack of progress on a new service contract.

Furthermore, the SRR noted a stalemate regarding the approval of waste regulations, which includes the proposed establishment of an environmental inspector role to deter illegal dumping. These issues arise despite a recent approval of a four-year programming document that increased annual costs by approximately 8 million euros, a figure determined by the regulatory authority ARERA.

President Tubiolo emphasized that the current service standards and regulatory obligations are not being met, warning that these programmatic and management failures could jeopardize the sustainability of the waste management service in the near term.
