Palermo's Zen neighbourhood fireworks spark controversy over theater show

Fireworks were set off in the Zen neighbourhood of Palermo to celebrate a child's first birthday. Local volunteer groups – Handala, Laboratorio Zen Insieme and Lievito – say the display was a family celebration, not an attempt to disrupt the open‑air theater performance by actor Salvo Piparo organized by Teatro Massimo.

The groups reject claims that the fireworks were intended as a threat, calling such narratives “toxic” and “sensationalist”. They criticize interpretations that link the act to mafia motives and call for a more inclusive, continuous cultural programme that involves the local community.
