Colombia withdraws from Hague Group and opens embassy in Jerusalem

Colombia has announced its official withdrawal from the Hague Group, an international alliance established on January 31, 2025, to coordinate legal and diplomatic actions regarding Israel's activities in Palestinian territories. Foreign Minister Omar Bula stated the decision was made because the group was “created to isolate and attack Israel,” a stance rejected by the Colombian government. Colombia’s departure from the group, where it also held a co-chair position, follows previous withdrawals by Bolivia and Honduras.

This strategic shift in foreign policy coincides with the restoration of full diplomatic ties between Bogotá and Tel Aviv under President Abelardo de la Espriella. As part of this rapprochement, Colombia officially opened its embassy in Jerusalem on October 14, 2026. The move, which follows a 2024 diplomatic rupture under the previous administration of Gustavo Petro, has drawn sharp condemnation from 19 Arab and Islamic nations, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. These nations issued a joint statement declaring the move “null and void,” arguing it violates UN Security Council resolutions and undermines the two-state solution by attempting to change the legal status of Jerusalem.
