Palestinian American returns to besieged West Bank home
Loui Ridi, a Palestinian American from Toledo, Ohio, has returned to his home in the West Bank village of Qusra following a week-long siege by Israeli settlers. Ridi, who began constructing the house on his family's ancestral land three years ago, traveled from the United States to confront the occupation of his property.
Upon arriving at the hilltop residence with a military escort, Ridi was instructed by Israeli soldiers to remain inside because the area had been declared a closed military zone. While the military requested that settlers leave the area, Ridi reported that settlers remained in close proximity and expressed fear that they would return to threaten his family as soon as the soldiers departed.
The standoff in Qusra occurs amid a broader trend of increasing settler activity and land seizures in the occupied West Bank. Ridi described the encounter as an illustration of the military's inability or unwillingness to remove settlers from Palestinian properties.
