Palestinian citizens of Israel record high voter turnout

Palestinian citizens of Israel participated in recent elections at a record rate of approximately 80 percent, a significant increase from the 53 percent turnout recorded in previous elections. This surge in participation follows decades of electoral boycotts by many in the community who viewed the political system as unrepresentative and oppressive.

The high turnout has granted Arab political parties unprecedented influence in the 120-seat Knesset, securing 19 seats. According to the Mossawa Center, a civil society organization, the increased engagement was driven by several factors, including rising violent crime within the Arab community and a desire to oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing coalition.

Political leaders, including Dr. Ahmad Tibi of the Joint List, indicated that the community sought to change the political reality shaped by ministers such as Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. The Joint List and the United Arab List (UAL) were among the primary recipients of these votes, reflecting a shift toward using the ballot box to demand civic equality and political accountability.
