Palestinian crisis grows over bodies held by Israel

Palestinians are observing the National Day for the Return of Palestinian and Arab Martyrs' Bodies as the crisis regarding the number of Palestinian bodies held by Israel reaches unprecedented levels. While Palestinian institutions have documented the identities of 799 individuals held by Israel—including 256 in closed military cemeteries known as ‘number graves’, 99 former prisoners, 81 children, and 10 women—Israeli security sources suggest the actual number may be significantly higher.

Reports from Haaretz, citing security sources, indicate that Israel may hold approximately 1,700 Palestinian bodies. These are reportedly kept for potential use in future prisoner or hostage exchange agreements, with the majority originating from the Gaza Strip. The issue has intensified since the escalation of conflict in October 2023, leaving thousands of Palestinians missing and hundreds of unidentified bodies returned to Gaza.
