Palestinian delegation visits Sweden to discuss National Council elections

A Palestinian delegation, led by Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee member Wasil Abu Yousef, has arrived in Sweden to discuss arrangements for the Palestinian National Council elections. The visit is part of a global tour aimed at engaging the Palestinian diaspora to ensure broad participation from political factions, civil society, women, and youth.

The proposed electoral structure involves 132 members elected in the Palestinian territories, 67 members representing the occupied territories, and 150 members representing Palestinian communities abroad. These preparations follow the scheduled legislative elections in the Palestinian territories on November 28.

Simultaneously, the Palestinian cause has become a prominent topic in Swedish domestic politics ahead of the September 2026 parliamentary elections. Recent media coverage in Sweden has scrutinized the connections between various Swedish political parties—including the Left Party, Social Democrats, and Green Party—and Palestinian figures and organizations, highlighting the increasing role of the Palestinian issue in Swedish political discourse.
