Israel confirms death of Gaza detainee Ihab Mohammed Abdel Qader Diab

The Israeli Prison Service has confirmed the death of Ihab Mohammed Abdel Qader Diab, a 36-year-old Palestinian detainee from the Gaza Strip. The announcement comes nearly two years after his reported death, with Palestinian officials suggesting he may have died around September 18, 2024, roughly nine months after his initial detention on December 12, 2023.

Israeli authorities stated that Diab died due to an underlying health condition. However, his family and Palestinian officials have rejected this claim, asserting that he was healthy at the time of his arrest and alleging that his death was the result of torture, medical neglect, and brutal conditions. Gaza's Prisoners' Ministry has held the Israeli government and prison administration fully responsible, calling for an independent international investigation.

According to the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, Diab's death brings the total number of Palestinian detainees who have died in Israeli custody since 1967 to 328. Since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, 91 detainees have died in custody, 53 of whom were from Gaza. The case has increased scrutiny on Israel's detention system, which includes thousands of Palestinians held under administrative detention without formal charges.
