Palestinian detainee Mu’taz Al-Atrash dies in Ofer Prison
Mu’taz Nizam Muhammad Al-Atrash, a 21-year-old Palestinian from Hebron, has died while in custody at Ofer Prison. According to Palestinian prisoner advocacy groups and his family, Al-Atrash had been held under administrative detention since October 2025 without formal charges or a trial, based on a secret file.
His family stated that he had no known health issues prior to his arrest. While the specific circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, Palestinian organizations have raised concerns regarding medical neglect, torture, and deteriorating conditions within Israeli detention facilities. An Israeli court has ordered an autopsy to be conducted in the presence of a family representative.
Advocacy groups report that Al-Atrash’s death brings the number of identified Palestinian prisoners killed in Israeli custody since the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023, to 92. Since 1967, the total number of identified Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli prisons is cited as 329. The Israel Prison Service stated it does not comment on individual cases for privacy and security reasons but maintains that detainees receive medical care and rights in accordance with the law.
