Palestinian detainee Riyad Al‑Bustanji’s health at risk in Italy’s Bancali prison
Riyad Al‑Bustanji, a 60‑year‑old Palestinian religious authority detained in Italy since 1994 for alleged fundraising for Hamas, is being held in the Alta Sicurezza 2 section of the Bancali prison in Sassari. The family and several Sardinian pro‑Palestinian groups say he suffers from frequent diabetic crises, a prostate condition, hypertension and other serious illnesses, yet he does not receive timely food, medication or the medical treatment required for his conditions. They also allege that the prison’s extreme temperatures, lack of a ventilator, and severe restrictions on phone communications further jeopardise his health and rights.
The associations Culleziu contra a la Gherra, Giovani Palestinesi Sardegna and Amicizia Sardegna‑Palestina have called for immediate access to proper medical care, adequate nutrition and the restoration of his communication rights, warning that the current neglect puts his life in danger.
