Palestinian economy faces political banking crisis, warns Monetary Authority
Yahya Shanar, Governor of the Palestine Monetary Authority, has stated that the Palestinian economy is facing a financial and banking crisis with political dimensions linked to Israeli measures. He noted that the situation exceeds traditional economic shocks, citing threats to correspondent banking relationships with Israeli banks, the withholding of clearing revenues, and the accumulation of over 15 billion shekels in surplus cash that cannot be returned to Israel.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Shanar warned of the impact these issues have on trade, payments, and the economy's ability to meet its needs. He called for permanent and clear banking arrangements to protect correspondent relationships from political tensions and urged international financial institutions to support the continuity of official financial channels.
Despite these challenges, Shanar reported that the Palestinian banking sector remains functional with strong regulatory indicators, including a capital adequacy ratio exceeding 17%. He emphasized the authority's commitment to international banking standards and anti-money laundering compliance to maintain international confidence.
