Palestinian journalists honored through new oral history project and London tribute

A new oral history project, ‘The Living Record’, has launched to document the lives and experiences of slain Palestinian journalists. Initiated by the group Writers Against The War On Gaza, the website aims to provide a platform for the stories of those killed in Gaza through the perspectives of their colleagues, seeking to counter what organizers describe as a failure by mainstream and international media to protect journalists under international law.

The project’s launch coincides with the one-year anniversary of the death of Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif. Al-Sharif, 28, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on August 10, 2025, near al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. While Israel alleged he was linked to Hamas, Al Jazeera and the Committee to Protect Journalists have rejected these claims.

In London, a tribute panel titled ‘Bearing Witness’ was held at Palestine House to honor al-Sharif and other media workers. Organized by Youth Movement Palestine, the event featured journalists and researchers discussing the impact of the conflict on media personnel. According to the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate, 264 journalists have been killed, 572 injured, and 38 detained since October 2023.
