Palestinian Ministry of Health reports improving medicine availability

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported a gradual improvement in the availability of essential and chronic disease medications following a period of significant shortages earlier this year.

According to ministry data, the availability of essential medicines stood at 82% at the beginning of the year but dropped to 66% by July 23, 2026, at which point 175 items had zero stock. Since August, availability has steadily risen, reaching 80% by September 10, 2026.

The Ministry is prioritizing chronic disease medications, which comprise approximately 202 different types. Between early August and September 24, 2026, about 95 types of chronic medications that previously faced shortages were supplied. The Ministry noted that because many supplies are sent directly to health centers rather than central warehouses, the impact of these deliveries may not be fully reflected in central stock levels but is visible in the continued treatment of patients.

To prevent treatment interruptions, the Ministry is seeking alternative medications, exploring different treatment protocols, and referring patients to contracted service providers, particularly for cancer treatments, despite the increased costs. The Ministry also continues to coordinate with suppliers and may request international donations if necessary.
