Mahmoud Abbas postpones Palestinian elections to September 2027

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a decree postponing both presidential and legislative elections to September 11, 2027. This decision cancels the previous plan to hold legislative elections on November 28, 2026.

Abbas cited several obstacles for the delay, including ongoing Israeli military operations, settlement expansion, settler violence, and movement restrictions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. In the Gaza Strip, the decree pointed to exceptional security and humanitarian conditions, the incomplete withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the lack of progress in reconstruction efforts.

In response, Hamas has called for a comprehensive national dialogue to reform Palestinian institutions and create a unified political program. The group expressed readiness to participate in negotiations to address national threats and manage a transitional period.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected the claims, calling the postponement a lie intended to evade accountability.

Separately, the Gaza Government Media Office reported that during a year of ceasefire, Israel committed 5,474 violations, resulting in 1,488 Palestinian deaths. The office also noted that only 34% of expected aid trucks have entered Gaza, with approximately 74,855 trucks arriving out of an expected 219,000.
