Paling Yards Wind Farm logistics require new road through Wellington roundabout
Trucks carrying components for the 47‑turbine, $600 million Paling Yards Wind Farm will travel about 645 km from the Port of Newcastle to the site in New South Wales. Each turbine blade can be up to 65 m long and weigh 20 tonnes, making navigation of Wellington’s central‑business‑district roundabout – located near the Federal Hotel and a McDonald’s – a major challenge.
The Spanish‑Kuwaiti consortium GPG Australia, the project proponent, has spent two years negotiating with local and state authorities. It proposes to fund a new 510‑metre local road that will bypass the “McDonald’s Roundabout” by paving over a section of Percy Street and linking it directly to the Mitchell Highway. The plan also references recent upgrades by Squadron Energy to the nearby Mitchell Highway‑Goolma Road intersection.
The proposed infrastructure aims to ensure oversized load convoys can safely pass through Wellington while supporting the wind farm’s construction schedule.
